Team Jock Yoga warms up thousands at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon!

Last Sunday, very early on a cool and crisp morning, my awesome Jock Yoga team and I had the honour of leading the 5k runners of the 2015 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon through their official warm-up!

It was the second year in a row that we’ve had the privilege of leading this specific warm-up, and what a great participation response it was! Somewhere in the range of two thousand souls came to shake it with us and get ready for their run!

I’ve been leading Canada Running Series and Pride & Remembrance Run warm-ups for a few years now, and it’s actually been quite an evolution.

The first time I did it, I had been called upon to lead a warm-up “stretch”, which was more of a publicity opportunity for my brand and for my sponsor Skechers Performance. I realized over the first few years that something was missing in my integrity while leading a quick stretch and wearing matching shoes and shirts. It didn’t feel right to come out as a flashy team and just do a few stretches for show, and I actually became insecure while leading these warm-ups.


Two years ago, I decided the best way to overcome my insecurity was to be real and lead something worthwhile and effective and not just ‘look’ good. So, I took my education and experience, and from what started as a publicity-driven, pre-run ‘stretch’ I developed into a dynamic, effective and fun warm-up that helps prepare runners to run their personal bests. I’ve also realized, as with everything, truly seeking to serve and benefit others with an authentic and quality product leads to a deeper sense of fulfillment and confidence in me, and ultimately better publicity of the brands I’m promoting.

From a physical perspective, what I’m saying is, it’s actually better to stretch AFTER your run when your muscles are sore and tight. It’s much more effective to have a dynamic, repetitive movement-focused warm-up BEFORE your run. This literally warms up the muscles and joints in the patterns that they will continue to move in while you’re running.

When you come for a warm-up with Team Jock Yoga, you can expect to run through a series of movements and dynamic stretches (paired with energetic music!) that will SERIOUSLY prepare your body for distance racing and will DEFINITELY warm you up!

Oh, and of course we will still look good in our matching t-shirts and Skechers shoes!
